Today’s drill

We didn’t have races against other teams today, we had ‘time trials,’ which is essentially us racing against each other. Woo. I wasn’t excited to do them AT ALL because it requires experience on a one man canoe which I honestly don’t have much of. I think I can count on two hands the amount…

We didn’t have races against other teams today, we had ‘time trials,’ which is essentially us racing against each other. Woo. I wasn’t excited to do them AT ALL because it requires experience on a one man canoe which I honestly don’t have much of. I think I can count on two hands the amount of times I’ve taken a one man out and after today I think I’ve done about twelve miles altogether on one and that’s being generous. It also requires a decent canoe, which I was able to borrow thanks to our good family friends but I still wasn’t into it.

I just wasn’t motivated. You know? Unlike my writing, I feel like I don’t have anything to prove, I’m in this sport to have fun not to be competitive against my own teammates. Going up against my friends isn’t fun to me; I mean don’t get me wrong, I AM competitive, and I will try my hardest if my heart is in it

So anyway, before I bore you anymore, I’ll hurry up and say what I was going to say. Just as we’re coming around one of the turns I look up and a see a dorsal fin. Immediately, I think of this lovely drawing my daughter did for me yesterday– she called it scribble scrabble but what does it look like to you?

You’re right. A shark. A manō. With lots and lots of TEETH.

So my mind is visualizing this drawing and I’m wondering if maybe she was predicting something when she drew it, and I push my paddle harder into the water to propel myself away from the thing with the fin and I look over my shoulder with one eye open. Again, a fin, then a tail, then a nose, then three fins, three tails… Yup, it was a pod of dolphins.

My heart still wasn’t in it but it was all a flutter and I paddled to my slow ass finish with a big smile on my face.

The end.

I guess the moral of the story is, even though things suck ass sometimes, you can still find good in it if you just open your eye and look.
