Thankful

I haven’t been blogging because I’ve been working on my new book; a romantic comedy that I am loving to pieces. You know those books that make you laugh– the ones you actually have fun with? This is one of those.

Plus, I haven’t really had anything to blog about. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’ve been waking up, and breathing air and everything, but I’m at that point where I don’t want to bother anyone with the minute details of my life.

Until now.

So I was googling my name to find Makena’s Shadow book reviews, as writers often do (yes, it’s pretty factual because I googled that too.) and I came across one on Amazon. It was three stars. THREE. STARS. So I read the review (even though said google search said not to) because I had to. You know how it is. It read: “The story ends where there could have been much more; this was what prompted the ‘medium’ star rating.”

I didn’t know whether to be mad, or feel flattered.

Makena’s Shadow was written for grades 8 and up. It is within the higher end of the “recommended” word count parameter (go google it) at over 65,000 words, and came out to 230 pages (line spaced one-and-a-half times.)

I could have been insulted, but basically, the way I took that review is: the person deducted stars because they wanted to read more. Not because I needed to write 40,000 more words to make my book complete.

I chose to look at it like it’s a weird compliment.

I found a nice review for my first book, Fricken Kids, along with the Kirkus review I blogged about before, (at least, I think I blogged about it…)

And then I found a review from School Library Journal.

It took a few days for me to read but I was finally able to open it this morning.

This might not seem like such a big deal to anyone, but it’s a HUGE deal to me. Unlike some people that I’ve found via google, I don’t have an enormous support group. Never have. (I can’t even get ‘likes’ on Facebook from people who are supposed to like me!) I only have a small handful of people around me who tell me to keep plugging away– but these people also do not read what I write, and don’t have any feedback to give me.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, it’s nice to have people who say that they believe in you, but it’s also nice to have other people who are into reading tell you that you are doing a good job. You know?

Anyway, here’s the review:

I feel so grateful and blessed whenever I find out that people actually took the time to read and review my books.

So, thank you to anyone out there who bothers to review anything I write. Like I said, it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it’s HUGE to me.

Makena’s Shadow Reviewed by Kirkus

So my most recent novel, Makena’s Shadow was critiqued by Kirkus Reviews… I was so afraid to open it because I read a lot of negative things from other writers, so I had my husband read it first. I’m happy with it. Read it here if you’re curious. If not, it’s okay. I’m putting it on my blog so I know where to find it.

Cold

Eyes cut into me

His smile, filled with shards of glass

No warmth; only frost.

Space

on his side, on hers
two lingering bodies sleep
waiting to collide
