A poem should rhyme
sometimes
or never rhyme
at all
it should flow
with smooth syncopation
precise military cadence
like that rhythmatic system of life
it should make use of proper language
describe all of nothing
and everything at once
a poem should make sense
(yet sometimes it can make no sense or very little sense at all)
a poem should dig the reader out of burly wet bushes
fill the gap
erase one’s wrinkles
repair a frown
shape absurdities
with meaningful descriptions
drawn from the thesaurus
thick dictionary dreaming
lit classic jumping
encyclopedia pie
it should not cause harm
but bother a soul just enough
to give them grief
to make them think
to make them
to make
to
a poem should not contain idioms
but be tall in order
short in stature
wide as the ocean
squat as a seed
it should be
playful yet serious
meager and wanting
sharp as a bludger
wholesome as a ho
a poem
should be
as hilarious as a heart attack
solemn as a clown at a birthday party
but mostly
a poem should
r i s e
and never, ever, ever
not be read
